Ernest T Bass, The Fun Girls, there was a host of hilarious characters on that show. Hard to pick a favorite episode, but ranking high is when Aunt Bee got a potent elixer from a medicine man and got “gassed”—Andy’s word. Her piano playing and singing in this condition was hysterically funny. “Toot, toot, tootsie, goodbyyyye” 🎶
I’ve always enjoyed whistling. If I had practiced on the piano as much as I whistled, I’d probably be able to play more than one song all these years later. All I have to do is think of Andy and Opie walking along together and I hear the tune and whistle the theme song.
I’ve read when she died in 1989, Frances Bavier funneled most of her estate into an annuity that, to this day, pays out a yearly Christmas bonus to every Siler City police officer. A tip of the hat to Andy and Barney perhaps?
A polished and refined big city actress yet she’d moved to a small southern town, perhaps hoping to recapture the essence of Mayberry. I’m certain it was tiring to be continually tied to her character. But deep down I think she made friends with Aunt Bee.
In the end Frances became a recluse with an over abundance of cats. As if I couldn’t love her more!
Aunt Bee was a lot to live up to. But the pickle fiasco proves you don’t need to be perfect to be loved.
A gracious good morning and happy Wednesday to all yall. Dang its cold ! Its 16 degrees at 0430 and it'll probably drop to 13 before daylight. That show left its mark on America because that's what we want our country to be. Its what we aspire to be. Honest, simple just GOOD.
I've got to get going. Yall have a wondermous day. And ...
Hope it warms up a bit before the sun sets again. Here in sunny north FL it was 22 degrees at 5:30 so I hunkered back under the covers for just a bit longer than usual. Crawled out from under the covers & started moving my day around 7:00.
The Andy Griffith Show was and still is iconic, for sure. My grandparents and most of our aunts, uncles, and cousins lived just half an hour or so south on Rt. 52 from Mayberry (otherwise known as Mt. Airy) in Winston Salem. I think my children almost thought of Andy, Opie, and the rest of the folks who populated our TV every day at 5pm as extended family. Some of their accents sounded the same. When we visited our North Carolina relatives, whom we loved dearly, it was always like coming home to the same joyous reunion every time (visits were a few days at a time, always happy - fish and relatives don't start to smell "off" until 3 days later). At 5pm on weekdays, even living a day's travel away, we got to go "home" for 30 minutes at a time. Things always turned out as they were supposed to after a little time in Mayberry, NC. Sean, you could have had a lot worse role model than Sheriff Andy Taylor.
As a native North Carolinian, I always loved, and was proud of, the Andy Griffith Show. So many life lessons to be learned from watching such a simple show. I've been to Mt. Airy, sat in the chair at Floyd's, visited the museum - great day. Seems like Mt. Olive pickles would be the best time leave - another NC icon.
Practically the only positive image (and accurate) of Southern people. I could practically recite every word from every show as I watch it and wonder how it could have faded away.
Billy Graham…..Charles Stanley….Jeanne Robertson…all people of faith who have changed lives. Billy Graham had positive global influence! His son, Franklin, continues with global ministry. I could spend the rest of the day providing southern names but you would not recognize most of them. These are men and women who contributed to make our lives better! Most are/ were humble and not desirous of recognition. From some of my reading about winners from American Idol, it seems the majority of winners hail from the south. All described as very talented!
I recognize all of them but none are part of what I was trying to comment on. Popular Culture, daily or weekly shows, television or radio, intended to entertain, presenting images of a positive nature in an everyday situation. Religious people who were and are trying to educate people as to a positive relationship with God are aiming at something other than entertainment at least in the most common definition. I stand by my statement.
Makes me want to pick up a cane pole & held to the water to catch some Sun fish (Brim).
My Granny Pearce was our family’s Aunt Bee. Granny was always cooking & passing along her words of wisdom. The only problem was she lived 1800 miles from us & wasn’t always reachable by phone because the switchboard operators were busy manning all the “party lines” in Granny’s little town.
Paul, my father (retired USMC) used to say "A coward dies a thousand deaths; a brave man dies but once.) I've also heard "Pick your battles.) You're so right Carl!
Paul, since we're on the subject, my cousin was engaged to a DAL Flight Attendant from Arkansas and went to spend a Christmas holiday with her family. They had a big spread and retired to the living room. The mother, who was somewhat jumbo sized, felt "the Call" and excused herself to the bathroom at the top of the stairwell. Apparently she had some serious bidness to attend to and then tried to camerflarge her work with about a half aerosol can of Evergreen "foofoo" spray. She then returned to the party as if nothing had happened. The prospective daddy in law, took no prisoners, proudly proclaiming "Damn Joyce, it smells like somebody she it a Xmas tree!"
BTW, probably for unrelated reasons it didn't work out!
I always thought Otis was a hoot! He’d get the jail cell keys and lock himself in the cell. All while Andy and Barney are right there. That’s just like family!!

Bing Crosby was the king of whistling in my book!

Thank you for the background info on Francis Bavier. Very interesting lady who had a most benevolent heart!

A wonderful episode of just one aspect of unconditional love.

I would be happy to hear of another

Thanks for the fun memories!
Andy Griffith and The Beverly Hillbillies were two of my favorite shows growing up.
I’d never heard this before, but pickles are the perfect “flowers” to leave for her, aren’t they? Thank you.
If I ever get in the neighborhood, I will bring a jar of bread & butter pickles. 💐😇📺
Home Made?
Yep, and with all due respect to Aunt Bee, I follow the recipe😄🥒
I just use the one out of the Ball book! Have people coming back for more, even a few years old!

Probably a wise choice considering the weather!
Thank you my dear friend for sharing one of your precious memories with us 🙏
