Day Three of beach vacation. They awoke early. The sun wasn’t fully up, but obscured by a quiltwork of gray. It was balmy and warm. The seagulls were still asleep. His blind 12-year-old goddaughter’s first words were “Can we go swimming in the ocean?”
I believe little Miss Becca knows a thing or two, like wrapping a middle-aged writer around her finger. It's a wonder how she does that while having him hold on to her foot in the surf. Pretty remarkable. But then she is a pretty bright light.
Floating in the Gulf with SOS holding your feet! What a beautiful memory , I’m sure she will never forget. I don’t know which one of you is the luckiest one!?
I smiled from beginning to end while reading “Becca’s Day”…so aptly named, because Becca called the shots! Sean, you are such a softie where she is concerned❣️
I’m so glad you granted all of her wishes…swimming in her “ocean”, even though you tried and failed to convince her otherwise. She “thoughtfully” (and gratefully) ate your eggs, while you settled on a granola bar. You held her hand tightly while walking in the sand. Going deeper into the water made me a little nervous, but I kept on smiling. And then you held her feet while she floated. What a trooper you were the whole time❣️
Thank you for sharing your delightful banter back and forth…and for the smiles😍
I love your tales of Becca! It fascinates me how a blind child can cause a person to see better and differently. Please tell her she is a gift to the world.
Love the way you two interact … so smooth and natural as though you had known each other forever! You are both so talented but most of all you are so fortunate to have such a friendship 😍
What pure childlike joy you are experiencing…l’ve never been privy to this first hand type emotions since the powers of the universe didn’t align for me to get to be a mom, leading to the age I am now and the obvious omission of grandkids. Please for those of if who are outside observers keep up the stories and pictures painted in our minds of the scenes of innocent joy, laughter and the million questions that come along. It makes me hope that maybe, just maybe it’s not too late for me somehow to find that joy someplace and somehow….🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Pone, no offence but keep dis up an yous gone have to get rent a You Haul to get poor Becca back to the Ham. Don't her peoples feed her? Take it from one who knows about being hongry. I just don't want the poor kid to be harpooned secondary to a case o mistaken identity!
Sounds like you needs to take her to The Doughnut Hole and let her bat cleanup! Besides, you knows Dat swimmin after eatin double hepins causes Cramps??? Hate to stick my nose whar it don't belong! But it never stopped me befer! Sounds like it's time Fer another trip to da "Haus!"
The pure innocence love and trust she has for you is so very beautiful. Thank you for sharing her with us and I’m with Becca, I always refer to the gulf as the ocean too! Beautiful minds think alike sometimes Sean! 😂
I grew up in LA ( Lower Alabama ), and it’s “the Gulf”, OH, but for sweet Becca, who has allowed me to learn a thing of two through her. She is a gift. Becca can call that big blue body of sand and water the ocean forever💙
The simple things in life are the best. No frills needed… just three loving hearts. We can’t forget Jamie who supports and encourages y’all 24/7. God bless forever this trio he put together.
There is a lot of trust that Becca has in you. She instinctively knows she has found a guardian angel watching over her that is disguised as a writer who also plays the banjo.

Can you imagine being blind and having enough trust in the person you are with to just lie back and float in the Gulf of Mexico
for the first time? The picture in my mind of her smile is beautiful.

Wow…way to knock me over with those waves…of emotions.
My only hope is I could learn to smile like a blind girl….
Ah, but the joy of delighting in a morning in the ocean. Oops! Sorry, Sean. Gulf!
Becca! What a treasure! Sean! What a sport! Nothing like exploring the Gulf together.
Sean - Thanks for sharing your adventures with Becca. These stories have a very positive impact! We want to hear more…..
