I raise service dog puppies for Canine Companions. Friends of ours raised a puppy named Bretagne who was named in honor of this honorable canine hero. We know Bretagne's story well. Thanks for sharing it here.
I was a puppy raiser...I had Otto! I saw a trainer today at Sam's. Otto failed his test in California because of an egotistical handler. My Ex bought him back for a dollar, then CCI wanted him back. Nope!
He went on to be a well respected hospital dog for kids!
Totally in tears for these incredible stories. We don’t deserve them but can’t imagine life without dogs. Incredible companions ~
I rescued 3 ex-racing greyhounds & one I trained to become a therapy dog. There was no greater joy than seeing her approach so gently a frail dementia lady who had not spoken for quite some time. My dog laid her head in her lap…the women smiled, gently petted her head & got teary eyed remembering her dogs. The nurse shook her head & said…”This is the 1st in a while that she has shown any reaction”.
I continued to take my dog to nursing homes…the patients lit up when the dogs came in.
Dogs are truly furry angels & it’s our duty to love & protect them….always. ❤️❤️❤️
God Bless the dogs & their handlers from WTC who worked so tirelessly with such hope … 🐶 ❤️🐶❤️🐶❤️🐶
Oh dear Lord, those precious babies. They had more than just a physical purpose. They had a direct knowledge that hurting, agonizing souls needed them with their overflowing love and the sweet however temporary comfort. The feel of that fur on roughened painful hands, the soft eyes that looked at devastated faces, no, we could never deserve them. We can only thank God for this great blessing.
I knew dogs were involved in all the rescue and recovery efforts after 9/11. This is the first time I've heard their stories. I don't cry easily, but I just had tears running down my cheeks. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful stories.
Your essay about the rescue dogs almost wrecked me, too. We don't deserve dogs, you're right, Sean. They are definitely God, spelled backwards. I walked with one of my neighbors this morning and her two small dogs, Sherlock and Watson. They hadn't seen me in almost a week, and the smaller one, Watson, who never jumps on people, put his paws up on my leg to remind me he was there and i needed to squat down and pet him, instead of my talking to his owner. He is also the character of the pair and has quite the personality. All dogs have personalities. They are special beings, for sure. And all of these that you mentioned, Sean, are special heroes who more than did their duty of searching! They completely deserve the recognition they received.
A gracious good evening yall. I love my pack of 6 dogs. All different all special. Losing one is losing a family member. All we should do is treat them the way we would want to be treated.
Sound familiar? Gotta hit the hay. Rest well my friends and ...
Dogs are such wonderful beings. A friend and his neighbors are working at befriending an abandoned dog. They are slowly making progress. It's likely a dog that was left when a family moved out of the neighborhood. When a dog decides to show you its loyalty there's nothing quite like it. If only there were more of us to show them that same kind of loyalty in return.
Bless your friend and his neighbors, Lander. They are committed to winning the trust of an animal who still can't believe his "owners" are not going to return. Never, ever, for the life of me, will I ever be able to understand (or forgive) humans who abandon.
It is so hard to understand. And I have heard about people leaving animals locked inside when they have moved away. Apparently, this dog was at least left with access to a dog door to get out. But it was during the deep freeze that my friends noticed her and started trying to feed her. Amazing what will she has to live even as she must be confused by her abandonment.
Oh Sean, I don’t know why you do this to me, but you do with so many of your stories. Watery eyes, heavy heart, goosies, etc……..but I love every word. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you.🫶🏻
I still love every dog that ever owned me, from the age of 2 to 72. My dogs made me into a far better person than I would have been without them. Furby Frodo Freddy Smith was 14 on ♡'s Day. I am his emotional support person. He is my fearless Doxie spirit animal.
Nope, we don't.
But we are so, so very grateful we have them.

Thank you for what you do for those who need service dogs.

We absolutely love dogs. We have “rescued” several but in truth they “rescued” us. Great article. ❤️

Heroes, all of them. Thank you for telling their stories.❤️❤️
Thank goodness they are there though. Life is lifeless without them.

Oh my Lord, this has wrecked me. In a good way, I guess. 😭
Especially poignant.
Thank you for telling us about these four-legged heroes.

You are correct- we absolutely do not deserve them.
I can hardly wait to see my Sadie Mae again. She was the best🐕🦺
