Yeees. My husband’s college job “pre-loading” UPS trucks turned into a career in the shipping industry, rather than a stepping stone to his psychology/business major. When he was over the Fed Ex Ground terminal, somewhere in KY, he personally delivered someone’s heart medication in his private vehicle, leaving me as the Lone Ranger with no Tonto at a moment I thought I needed his presence. No one died at our house, but they might have at the delivery destination, had he not made that selfless decision. We have a clay “UPS Man” that hangs on our Christmas tree.

There’s a saying, there is no love without sacrifice. That’s because true love is not about us, it is about those whom we love. Whether through mutual hardships, when they’re seemingly undeserving (grumpy) and even when we don’t feel like it (we’re grumpy).

And that’s what marriage is. You stand at the altar (no coincidence) and sacrifice your own ego and vow to serve the other. Each spouse. For a lifetime.

Jamie’s gift has great value in what it represents. Sacrificial love. And now we celebrate the birth of the One who made the greatest sacrifice of all and for all of mankind.

I Corinthians chapter 13, verses 4-8, and 13.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away...

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. “

Getting through those early Christmases with grit, determination, and imagination - and finding a way to show those we love what they mean to us - shows us what we can do when we really want to. My first "married" Christmas, my husband and I couldn't afford a tree, so we had a Christmas branch! I picked it up from a tree lot on my walk home from work. It had been trimmed from the bottom of an Evergreen and tossed aside. The wonderful smell was the same, our little gifts fit neatly under it, and I thought it was the most beautiful "tree" ever. Merry Christmas 2023 to you and yours - may all your branches be fragrant!

The American hard working spirit is alive and well here! One door closes…..another one opens! The goal is before you and you make it! What joy! And the reward is never forgotten…..the red circled gift in the Sears Catalog is a reality with much emotion!!!! I’m blessed to have raised two children who also are driven to work hard with whatever they do. They, too, find much joy in the act of giving! As Dickens says….”May our Christmas heart last all year long!” God bless and officially, Merry Christmas!
