There aren’t enough “Blesseds….” when are hearts ache to the point of actual physical pain. We can offer only our heart’s moaning and groaning to God.

“I will raise my eyes to the mountains;

From where will my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121:1-2

Blessed are those who continue to fight for sensible gun control laws so that senseless tragedies don’t happen. We can ban books but not assault weapons??? God gave us common sense. We need to use it.

Nope. It is a God given right to protect oneself. It’s in the United States Constitution for a reason! Stay away from my Constitution. If those teachers would have been armed there would have been only one death and that was the demon that entered that school! Taking guns away from Law Abiding Citizens is a criminal act. 🙌🏻✝️

It does not give anyone the right to carry an automatic weapon. As a teacher for 38 years, I wouldn’t have wanted to be responsible for carrying a gun in my classroom. There’s a lot of movement and activity in today’s classrooms. It’s not a conducive setting for teachers with loaded guns. Teachers are nurturers, not killers. I wouldn’t want to face someone with an automatic or semiautomatic weapon.

Expand full comment
M Drake's avatar

Correct, not all teachers are meant to carry but the reason schools are targets by crazies is because they know there is no one to stop them! But then again, I don’t believe in public schools either because they have become indoctrination centers for our children. Homeschooling is the only way to go these days.

Susie S's avatar

M Drake, teachers have enough on their plate nowadays trying to work with kids who have irresponsible parents. The last thing teachers need to be responsible for is trying to protect their classroom children with a gun. That is a job for the person who trains with gun experience enough to be connected to that process. That is not a job for the teacher. You people who are so down on teachers, it's just like you to try to saddle them with that responsibility of protecting, too.

Teachers are teachers, not armed bodyguards. Armed teachers is a ridiculous idea. Sensible gun control is definitely the way to go. And assault weapons should be banned. Period.

Are you sure this is the right time and place to pick that -- discussion? Sean wrote a poignant, moving, unbelievably touching tribute. Anyone's views on gun control is moot; to each their own, just like all the other Amendments to the Constitution. Is anyone going to change their mind. No. The world in which we live NOW mandates actions, mandates what is necessary, even if we don't like the necessity or the reasons for it.

If you believe public schools are indoctrination centers for children, you obviously haven’t stepped foot in a school in quite some time and are getting your hateful misinformation from the entertainment channel that masquerades as news and likes to stir the pot with as much hatefulness as possible. Texas made provisions, by law, several years ago to have some of their good teachers armed to protect both the students and the other teachers.

And I am with you on the Home & Private schooling, especially in the metro areas. Our smaller public ones out here in the hinterlands aren't so bad yet, because we have local school board members who have to answer to the people. We also have lots of Homeschooling around too, and the majority of those kids are far ahead of the public schooled ones.

We can debate all day about gun laws. It might surprise you to learn automatic rifles aren't easy for civilians to get. This murderer used a semi-automatic rifle not an automatic rifle. The rifle used in this tragedy looks like a military issue rifle and has a large magazine. The rifle isn't the issue. The real issue is mental disease. There are treatment solutions but we don't promote them. I feel it's due to our inability to confront people who politize it.

Expand full comment
Sharon Thomason's avatar

Common sense gun laws would take into account semiautomatic weapons and large magazines, too. It would address the problem of the mentally ill having such easy access to any type of weapons. Proponents of common sense gun laws have no intention of taking guns away from responsible gun owners, but what is happening nowadays is most assuredly NOT what our founding fathers intended when they wrote the Second Amendment. Don’t twist it for your sick ideals so that more children may die.

Excellent memorial for the sad, sad tragedy that took place that day, Sean. Yes, blessed be the children, teachers and staff who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but blessed especially be the police officers who ran right into the line of fire to take out the mentally ill shooter, whose parents mourn still and probably feel guilt, even though they didn't commit the crime, their disturbed child did. May God bless all involved that day and take care of the souls that left their earthly existence that day. And comfort everyone who was impacted personally or sympathetically that day. With God's help, all can recover their lives, still remembering the horror of that day, but tempered with God's everyday blessings.

I can’t imagine this pain. For whatever reason, unbeknownst to me, we are utterly and completely ignoring mental health in this country. Go to any bookstore and what’s the largest section? Mental health. I was walking through the little girls section of a clothing store and all I saw were little shirts and dresses that said “you are enough” or “be brave” or “shine your light”. We never had to walk around with statement reminders on our clothing as kids. Instead of spending money outside our own walls, perhaps we should be spending it inside. We need mental health facilities on every corner, not a Starbucks. Someone with no self worth isn’t going to suddenly find self worth if you take away guns. They simply move to the next destructive means. We aren’t treating the issue at all, just putting more bandages over abscesses. Youth are now being raised in an environment of words on pages rather than face to face interactions. Parents need to be so incredibly proactive in monitoring social media and keeping their kids grounded. It’s such a slippery slope. God Bless these families. 😞

At its core the cause of every evil is hatred. Specific ideas are built into systems that help certain groups keep their power and accompanying wealth. Hatred stems from negative assumptions, images and beliefs about a certain group. All sides can be guilty. It fuels the pride of each group: each group’s identity is painted with broad strokes. We listen without thinking. More and more we are so consumed with abhorrence we wish to annihilate the other group.

Negative assumptions are accepted based upon a specific incident or person with little or no investigation of the group as a whole. All stereotypes are entirely false. Lies from the father of lies, in order to divide and conquer.

In times of crisis stereotypes become stronger and so the hatred. We’re seeing it played out today in cultural warfare. It is not political but spiritual warfare that we are in, make no mistake.

Wait for it

CHRISTIAN VALUES. Now I'm not a Bible thumper but dang yall still can't figure this out ! Its not the weapon , its the diseased brain that controls the finger that pulls the trigger. I've read the constitution it says "the right to bear arms" not the right to bear an assault weapon. I've attended and taught more active shooter classes that Carters got liver pills and you have to accept the fact that we need a deterent not excuses for behavior. How many good women and men that are veterans would be willing to step up to protect our schools ? Congratulations yall have managed to pass me off even before I go to da barn ! Thanks loads. It ain't gonna be easy but I wish us all to have a little...

Christian nationalists are part of the problem in this country.

This country is not a Christian nation!

There is freedom of religion, as well as freedom from religion.

Our forefathers believed in separation of church and state for good reason.

And now we have a Presidential candidate comparing himself to Jesus.

Profiting from the sales of God’s Word.

What could be more telling?

This confluence of Christian nationalism and a politician with a Messiah complex is disastrous.

“Thou shalt not have false gods before me.”

RicCy no matter where you stand politicall, the fact is there are 393 million firearms in civilian hands currently, and no matter how dopey it sounds, it's the truth "When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns." The fact is that in many places, especially rural areas there may only be one or two sheriff's deputies on call at night for the whole county, and if they're tied up the good meaning folks just gone be SOL as they say. And that's a fact. You say that would never happen, but it happens ever day. Like Pone's story. If you don't believe in self defense don't own a gun. PAX
