To this date, I have read these reads at home sitting in “my chair🙂”, while waiting, for someone, in parking lots, inside restaurants, in wait lines, while watching the news😳, while watching a movie or a documentary, in a doctor’s waiting room and probably some places that I can’t remember! I forward these reads to friends and post them on my family WhatsApp! I am 79 years old. I’ve always worked in education and in leadership. I read a lot. I research a lot. I just studied and earned a life coaching certification. I write all of this because, not to make myself look better, but to say that Sean’s reads have been and continue to be some of the best parts of my day! Thank you!!!

Likewise 79, and I agree 100%.

Sean Thank you for commending the BOY SCOUTS !

The oath is as follows "ON MY HONOR, I WILL DO MY BEST TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD AND MY COUNTRY AND TO OBEY THE SCOUT LAW, TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES, TO KEEP MYSELF PHYSICALLY FIT, MENTALLY AWAKE AND MORALLY STRAIGHT !

The Scout law has 12 points-- BE Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty. brave. clean and REVERENT !!!

I always heard the story about a mom that told her son, a scout, "if you see someone in need-DO THE DEED !"

What a great tribute ! Thank you !

As a former Scout, I cannot think of a better influence that we as young men and women had in our lives to be better people !!!!!

Outstanding! Thank you for reminding us of the oath! I remember hearing that spoken with much exuberance years ago!!!!

Mine is turning 50 this October and is still a wonderful, helpful person. He is a band director and is still influencing kids every day!

Ours is 52. I served on the Troop Committe during those years he was a scout. Many a hiking, camping, or canoe trip! We had a great scoutmaster, but we always seemed to pick the worst weather to do our outdoor adventures.

Your timing for camp outs sounds like ours! Lots of fun times, but lots of funny stories too about the monsoons we encountered!

Funny how we don't remember much about the few adventures that went as planned, only the "near-death" experiences.

I was pulling up to a Tractor Supply here in Georgia when a young man came up to me and first said "Hello" then proceeded to tell me about how great this popcorn was. I bought a bag, and he asked if I had been a scout. I told him I was a cub scout then a boy scout then an Explorer scout. I told him I went to scout camp every year and even went to Canada as an explorer scout and spent 10 days canoeing and camping around Canada's lakes. He was staring at me and said "Wow, you want two bags of popcorn?"

We were always doing something with the Boy Scouts. We didn't sell popcorn, we sold road flares. Times change.

Paul, as a fellow Georgian, I just gave you a follow. I also love my local Tractor Supply, as they helped socialize all three of my dogs. ❤️

My poor little dog is beyond socialization mainly because she is like me. Old and cantankerous

I have a few other stories on my page

Way to go, Paul! I remember the popcorn sales, and our son's troop always cut, sold, and delivered Christmas Trees.

I have two grandsons who are both Boy Scouts and are working on their Eagle ranks. They are part of a wonderful troop in Northern VA and have had many experiences that take them beyond sitting in front of a screen immersed in video games. They get a little bit of that, too, but their parents want them to be well-rounded adults. This wouldn't be possible without the many volunteer leaders and parents who make this happen. Maybe that's why there aren't as many, because people put their efforts into other pursuits.

Amen, I was a Scout leader for 8 years and an Eagle mom too!

I’m so proud of my son who did not join Scouts until he was 15. Two men from our church agreed to be Scout leaders and start a troop. He wanted to set an example for the younger boys. He had to work very hard to earn all of his badges and complete all of the requirements in order to become an Eagle Scout before he turned 18.

Good for him. That's quite an accomplishment.

I was short of making Eagle scout by 7 merit badges. The most formative years of my life were spent in the Boy Scouts of America. It taught me how to become self reliant and it empowered me and enhanced my self esteem in a world full of bullies. The skills I learned back them served me well now into my 70's! All the organizations such as scounting or Future Farmers of America or Big Brother/ Big Sisters etc.... we need them now more than ever to help guide our youth to become the leaders of romorrow.

We do need them!!!!

I was married to an eagle scout. I always said he was my boy scout. He turned into an Air Force officer and Flew in F4s and F-111s. He also coached Little League, Babe Ruth and ran the Umpires group for the district. He was posthumously awarded the Vermont Volunteer of the Year in 2021 at Fenway Park. Yes, if you can be a Boy Scout - be a Boy Scout. Chicks dig it.

When I was a Girl Scout, my mother was one of the leaders. When my daughter was a Girl Scout, I was one of the Leaders. My granddaughter is now a Girl Scout and her mother, my daughter, is a leader. May the chain remain unbroken. The men of our nation need to step up and lead.

Expand full comment

They are not allowed to lead any longer. Boy scouts do not exist. They even changed the name to Scouts with out the word Boy.

Expand full comment

Yes, the name changed. They are now just Scouts. They accept Boys and Girls. They are no longer gender exclusive. There is still an opportunity to lead. The Boy Scouts had an endowment. Girl Scouts have always had to sell cookies for funding. Perhaps that shaped different expectations for each organization. If it is no longer to be Scouts. Our men need to lead youth in another organization.

My 3 sons are Eagle Scouts. Two years ago on Christmas Day, I had a fall and cracked my head open. One of my Eagle Scout sons was visiting with us on that day and knew exactly what to do as we waited for the ambulance to arrive. I am forever grateful for this fine young man and his Boy Scout training.

My husband is an Eagle Scout. He learned how to be a leader and how to always be prepared for any situation. Sometimes over-prepared. He's 75. Always a scout.

Sometimes the older Boy Scout handbooks have the best content. The 1959 edition of the handbook has my favorite explanation and definition of the Scout Slogan.

The Scout slogan is “Do a Good Turn Daily.” It is part of the third point of the Scout Law - “A Scout is helpful.” And it is part of your Scout Oath - “… to help other people at all times.”

I was a Girl Scouts seemingly forever, Brownie to Senior Scout, then leader for several troops our daughters were in , then on the Denver Girl Scout board for the city, then serving as leader for Troops on Foreign Soil, then attending a WAGGGS (World Association of Girls Guides and Girl Scouts) world conference, where I did a newsletter in English, French and Spanish. After the girls had lost interest and then graduated, I used to do programs for local troops, and once received a district wide Achievement Award. I think I'm graduated from Scouts now, but I was a long-time supporter. However, Scouts has drastically changed over the years and is basically "woke" and letting transgenders decide which troop to join. I do not condone those aberrations. So do research on your local troops, of which many are still good, before you let your boys or girls join!!!! They used to be Great organizations, but...be wary.
