Clark Kent, an unassuming journalist, makes the world a better place through his thinly veiled identity. SuperSean, our daily dose of encouragement to do good.

I don't remember Clark ever reporting a news story. He just spent his time in the phone booth. No wonder Perry White was so irritable.

I had model kits as a kid. One of which was The Creature From the Black Lagoon. It stood on my bedroom table, arms outstretched… but not for a hug. One moonlit night I woke up to the said moonlight reflecting off the creature through the window. Suddenly, it moved… just slightly… but that act reeked terror in my little nine year old brain. There was only one thing to do. I broke off the creature’s arms, legs and head from his body and placed each part in separate trash cans throughout the house. I hoped that he wouldn’t be able to reanimate himself. I remember it took me a while to get back to sleep.

I was always connecting things as a kid… (except for the Creature From the Black Lagoon incident). There was a candy bar named Clark. I figured it would give me Superman powers. I ate one while swinging on Mableton Elementary School’s huge (to me) playground swing. I tried to fly… launching from the swing seat… I stopped eating Clark Bars after that.

Sean, I know I've said it before, but I'll read anything you write. You write with such humor and the understanding that readers enjoy being reminded of a kinder, more gentle past. That seems to be your strong suit --the blending of memories, humor and your intelligence. Thank you for sharing ... 'you' with us.

(a) Fun read - I can see the whole story as it’s going down (b) I have an almost 5 year old great grandson, you can’t win an argument with a kid or maybe I don’t want to try. They’re smarter than I was at that age! (c) My dad was my Superhero because he could do anything❤️

Superman has always been a hero to me. "What makes Superman a hero is not that he has power, but that he has the wisdom and the maturity to use the power wisely." – Christopher Reeve

I don’t know why, but as I was reading your article Sean, I was envisioning your walk in Spain with you wearing your Superman shirt. ( And I was thinking of Jesus Christ, my Superman who you embodied.) Thanks for the memory.

So much to unpack here. Superman was good. The first movie with Christopher Reeves was damned good. I even remember at the age of 3 my parents got me the Superman costume for Halloween. I thought I was so cool. Then we went to a Halloween event and 5 other boys had the same costume. Brought me back to earth quickly but I still tried to fly. But I am 18 yrs older than you, Sean. Spiderman was the first teenage super hero and I met him when I was 9. He had real problems and was not as powerful as Superman. I wanted to be Spiderman or Peter Parker for a few years. He was cool, funny and had the glasses and was way more nerdy than Clark. But the common theme we have was they were symbols of hope and strength when we felt powerless. That those with power and strength could be good people and would help those less fortunate. Damn sure could use a Superman or Spiderman right now. And we actually have them. All of us to speak the truth and show empathy and help one another. That is a super power we all have. btw I agree with the cashier....Matthew McConaughey has all the qualities of a super hero. A very good guy.

For me, cuteness isn't a factor. It's about being a Hero and protecting smaller weaker ones, who may not even realize the danger they are in from evil. Strength, agility, the sense of Duty all matter more. High purpose and self sacrifice to keep the world safer.

Gandalf operates on a higher level, he protects the Heroes so that they may focus on protecting the everyday people, such as Hobbits.

No, seriously, a real hero is Pete Buttigieg. Talk about smart, talk about having a gift of conveyance, talk about someone who preaches live and let live as long as they aren't hurting you, and, it's really pretty easy, it's simply, pretty much, mind your own damn business and get a life.

I had the same addiction to my Superman suit only I could only wear it to Sunday school and church. At the age I was at that time I only got about a month then, like yours, it disappeared. I wanted glasses so people wouldn't recognize me but by the time my eyesight started going down I had discovered the Lois Lanes of the world and Superman was fading like my pajamas did when they disappeared.
