Being born to and raised by good hardworking conservative ( is fluoridation of the water supply a commie plot?) southern folk , I am waay too polite to ask how the one judge knew what “underpants” tasted like. Still…….the question remains……..

I’m a Southern girl. I only eat Hellmann’s. Sorry Sean

Expand full comment

Me as well... but the original version of Hellmann's ... not vegan or any other version of their mayo. I was surprised they only mentioned two variations of the original and not "the" main original version of Hellmann's! Darn!

I have never heard of the Hellman variations mentioned in the taste test. My family prefers Hellman’s, and we keep a quart jar in the fridge (about one per month.)

Agree!

Never knew a southern girl to eat Hellmanns..to each his/her own. Of course I've never known anyone to know what underpants taste like either!🤣

I love Hellmann's, too, Goldie....but then, I've never tried Duke's. I'm going to try to find it. I live in Missouri. Will I find it here?? Anyone??

I’d sure think so! We can get it here in Oklahoma..

Southern as southern can get but it’s Hellman’s for us. Grew up on Kraft’s—Mom’s choice. But early marriage, we tried Hellman’s and never looked back! A few months ago, we bought a jar of Dukes to see what the hullabaloo was about. Waste of good money as far as our tasters were concerned. Yes, your mayo has to be just right for your tomato sandwich; but the true test is: can you enjoy it by itself on a soda cracker? Yes, to Hellman’s! No, to the others…

I’m a Southern girl and I’ve tried most all mayonnaise brands, including Hellman’s, Blue Plate, & Dukes. I like Dukes better than all of them, but I still prefer Kraft Mayonnaise, especially on a Tomato sandwich. It doesn’t compete with the tomato, it just helps to accentuate it.

I prefer Kraft also.

I’m a Southern man and only Dukes allowed in my house. There should be a stiff fine for anyone calling A Mater Samwich A Mater Samwich if it’s not made with Dukes. Excellent testing Sean

Hellman's! I've tried Duke's. It's fine. But, I was raised on Hellman's and prefer it to Duke's. One comment about your taste test - from the list, it doesn't seem Hellman's Original was included. To me, none of the other Hellman's variations I've tried measures up to the original. I'm intrigued by the Blue Plate mayo. I'll be visiting the grands in AL soon. If I get to a grocery, I'll have to look for it.

Be sure and try it. It is good

You didn’t include original Hellmann’s mayonnaise! That’s my comment

In my 60 years and 10 months on this earth, I’ve eaten Kraft, Hellman’s, Blue Plate, Bama(eww), Miracle Whip(triple eww), and for the first time last week, Dukes. I grew up, for the most part, on Kraft. But, Blue Plate has been my numero uno mayo for the last couple of decades or so. When Dukes touts the tartness on their label, they ain’t just kidding. The tartness is very noticeable which may not bode well on a banana sandwich. I’ve yet to try it on one and in my homemade pimento cheese. So, the jury’s still out on Dukes.

And why, why in the name of all that’s good and kind would y’all buy vegan and organic mayonnaise?!! The description is enough to curdle my stomach.

Years ago I enjoyed Trader Joe’s wasabi mayonnaise, great on a fish taco or sandwich. Heck, I used it on BLT’s, ham and cheese really any and all sandwiches. But I don’t travel to northern Virginia anymore. I’m interested in Blue Plate and Kewpie’s but somehow I don’t think Walmart will carry them.

Sorry, I like miracle whip in deviled eggs and egg salad. I like the tart with a hint of sweet. MW is a good change up even on tomato sandwiches. There I said it! Try it on toasted pumpernickel, a garden tomato and fresh ground black pepper. Delish! (Don’t worry I use regular mayo in my tuna and chicken salad.)

Mom used store brand mayo because it was the cheapest and everything she made was amazing. Growing up we never had store bought salad dressing. Mom made her own from mayo, a little mustard, vinegar, canned milk and a bit of sugar.

Oh, remember the light orange sandwich spread with relish in it, only available in pint sized jars. It was like a thick tartar sauce. You guessed it, I liked it too. Sandwiches were what we had for lunch all summer long so it was nice to have something a little different. Probably the only reason we had it was my grandparents ran a country store and would send us the ‘best if used by’ stuff that was out of date. Grandma and grandad sold the bologna in a roll you had to slice and the round wheels of black rind cheese. Now that was a dynamic sandwich with mayo and plenty of black pepper. I often stayed with them (they lived in the rear of the store).

Sorry, but this was not a legitimate test. You didn’t try Hellman’s Real Mayonnaise or Hellman’s Extra Creamy Mayonnaise. The organic stuff and the vegan varieties are just not the same. I think you have to try again. But maybe this time on BLTs - no avocados, just fresh, warm tomatoes from the garden. You won’t be getting up for a long time.

I am a lifelong lover of Blue Plate Mayonnaise. I kept hearing all the hoopla about Duke's, especially in conjunction with tomato sandwiches slathered with Duke's and massive home-grown tomatoes, so I decided to give it a try. The taste was fine, but the post-consumption reaction for me gave the name new meaning. In fact after I had spinal surgery last year, my intestines didn't wake up for 9 days. Food in, but no food out leaves one uncomfortable to say the least. After trying every normal remedy on God's green earth with no success, I remembered that small jar of Duke's in the fridge. I slathered up a nice sandwich and ingested it as directed. Lo and behold, the logjam was broken within an hour, and my body spent the next five days catching up on business. So Blue Plate for me, unless life isn't moving properly, then Duke's lives up to its name.

I live in Kansas and Duke’s is available here, so the South doesn’t have a corner on the market any more. And, like just about everything else on earth, you can buy it through Amazon! Duke’s is good, but I have to admit, despite being raised in Tennessee, I like Hellman’s regular mayo the best… Sorry Sean!

DUKE’S all the way!!! I was brought up right!! Waiting on the first ripe tomato. Soft bread, Duke’s mayo, thick slices of juicy, red German Johnson tomatoes and salt and pepper!! Eaten over the kitchen sink!!

Laughing out loud here! Great way to start the day. Wouldn’t use it to take stains off the driveway….that’s descriptive! Looking forward to the fresh out of the garden tomato sandwich with mayonnaise on homemade bread….yum.

Uncle Biddy would have agreed to the Duke’s taste test 100 %! At each family picnic there was ALWAYS a large jar of Dukes on the table contributed by him. As for me….I stand with the Hellman’s Fam! Very fun piece to read!
