I miss kids on bikes, at playgrounds, and up trees. I’m sure orthopedists miss the revenue. Couple of kids around the corner from us have spent the past year digging, filling, re-digging, furnishing, and making defensible a hole in their front yard. They’ve had toy construction trucks, traffic cones, the whole nine yards. I grin and wave every time I pass them. Might have to stop and help one day. But I’d probably get arrested. ☹️
Ernie, what a shame in this day and age that we have to think about things like that...... that evil seems to be everywhere. But, that's not saying there's not a lot of good, also.
Everything about what you just stated makes common sense, GOOD common sense. Why can't other people think like that. ALL IT TAKES ARE SOME LEARNED CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Again, it's not rocket science, is it?
Addendum to Ed... Ed, I think the interaction between the old neighbor, the children and you could be a precious memory for all, perhaps. (Of course, only after a reasonable time of observation in order of vetting the neighbor.)
Sean, most of us here were born, bred, and raised in an analog mechanical world, and we have, to different degrees, adapted to the digital world. You're right, we have lost something along the way. This morning I will spend time moving all my mechanical clocks and wristwatches ahead one hour, but it's a labor of love. I have an affinity for old clocks and watches from the late 1800s to the mid-20th Century.
The modern age has given us many things to be thankful for, such as medical treatments for ailments that a few decades ago would have simply killed us; near-instant communication with anyone, anywhere in the world; and a host of things too numerous to list here.
But we gained these things at a cost... the loss of a far simpler, slower pace of life. I think most of us are straddling two worlds, with one foot in the analog space and the other foot in the digital revolution. Young people today will never know that world, and more's the pity.
My dear friend once again you have reminded me of so many wonderful memories growing up and especially the riding horse in front of the stores that was so much fun and I remember it very well these are just wonderful memories now ones I will forever keep in my heart forever thank you for sharing your memories with us you beautiful treasure 🙏
Memories ~ they’re like a row of dominoes ~ all lined up, just waiting to be remembered. Bump one, it falls and starts a chain reaction. Ah, Memories // // // __ _
…and Putt-Putt, ice cream trucks, public swimming pools, knowing where everyone was playing by seeing their bikes laying in the yard, building dams in the creek, catching green lizards and tadpoles, chigger bites, penny candy, and on and on…
Unfortunately, in today's world, if kids left their bikes laying in the yard, within 1 hour or less they'd be gone.....stolen!!!! My son, who is 46, is of that time.....he and 4-6 of his friends....would leave their pile of bikes at whomever house they were at.....aahhhh....thanks for the memories!!!!
There is still a fabulous gumball machine in the ice cream shop in our little town. It’s one where the gumball goes down a curly path from top to bottom. I put a quarter in one day and a little boy standing next to me watched the gumball drop all the way. I told him he could have it so he dug it out of the chute. I put in another quarter and he watched again and then took that gumball as well, without me offering it. Then he walked over and gave one to his little sister and my heart melted. I finally got to keep the third one…
Growing up in the country on a gravel road you would think we would have to have a special bike because of all the pounding. Nope just a regular bike, they weighed a ton, but they were durable. Even the tires were made to be able to land a 747. If you had a flat the process was the same as what you did for a car. Take it off, take it apart, hot glue the patch, put it back together and put it back on and away you would go. A front basket was also a necessity for going after groceries at the country store or carrying worms to go fishing on the river. Kids in the country moved around like the kids in the city. Bikes.
I could rant about passwords, but everyone has their own rant about them, so I'll chose to address the "where did such-an-such go?" For instance, monkey bars and swing sets. They reason they disappeared is because of "safety." Some kid fell off a monkey bar and broke his arm. So we" have to ban them, so nobody else gets hurt. It's one of the lessons needed by kids. He or she will be more careful next time they get on a monkey bar. I've always loved swinging in swings. My dad even put one on one of our sturdier tries just for me. I could swing in it for ages, dreaming about how high i might be able to go, how far I could jump from a swinging swing. Never hurt myself, never sprained an ankle jumping off. But if I had, I would surely have become more careful I still when I see a swing, will try to have a go at it. Usually, though, they're child sized and I have long legs, so it's not near as much fun as it once was.
Oh yah! Our swing set wasn't anchored all that well. We kids would swing as high as we could, trying to make the legs come out of the ground. Fortunately we were only able to rock it. Great competition between us! I did split my head open and have the scar to prove it, but. . . it was fun!!
Whatever happened to humor? Remember when laughing at something truly funny was gut busting? I see people laughing at misfortune. People falling is a great example. We see reels of video of people falling and the background sound is people laughing at what could be a very painful, dangerous, humiliating and embarrassing event. I see these videos as disturbing and I feel bad for the individual(s). When was the last time you had a good belly laugh where your sides hurt and you had to run to the bathroom so you wouldn’t pee your pants? I find it sad that we have become sardonic and that sarcasm is the norm for laughter. Sarcasm to me can also be considered a form of bullying…another subject, I know. We can’t even laugh at ourselves. When something unusual happens or an embarrassing situation occurs give it a giggle and make your day with a few smiles.
Pandora, boy, I'm really with you on those videos where somebody actually got or really could get hurt. First, it's hard to believe that somebody could be that stupid doing those stupid, dangerous stunts. What could possibly go wrong?! 🤪. DUH. And then the ones watching, laugh. Absolutely no common sense whatsoever all the way around. If I see that, I shake my head and change the channel or read a book. What have we become?? Totally insensitive too others pain and misfortune. This is a sick society. Other countries seem to be above this, more mature and less silly, I have noticed.
AM Radios are still in cars! We in the industry pleaded, cried, and went to our Congress People to make sure they are available in an emergency! Thank Heavens😇📻and I miss the good prizes in the cereal boxes and Cracker Jacks, too.🥣🍿
It's hard to understand why kids wouldn't want to climb trees. And there are no more merry-go-rounds on playgrounds because kids would fly off and possibly scrape their knees. Monkey bars have gone the way of the world--too dangerous. And I agree with you--I hear "brah" all the time, and it sounds odd. You're not complaining, my friend. You're making observations that bring grins to the rest of us and make us all question where all the fun stuff went.
I had to add baseball. Not professional. Just kids, whoever road by on their bike and got plugged in with us. Playing for hours in the sun till it started to go down and yes it was awesome!
Catching the lighting bugs after dark and after watching them for awhile, then letting them go.

Sounds like those kids have good parents.

Thank you, Bill. Beautifully said.

Bareback, barefoot and no helmet...yet we survived. I still miss my horse.

Childhood memories, so fresh and vivid...able to be summoned whenever I want them. I only wish I could remember where I set my purse an hour ago.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Picked by young girls every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone to young men every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone to soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the soldiers gone? Gone to graveyards every one.
Where have all the graveyards gone? Gone to flowers every one.
When will they ever learn?
Reading those lyrics gave me goosebumps!!

What about Cracker Jacks and the surprise in the box?
Indeed, Cracker Jacks and the little prize in the box!

I grew up in the ‘70’s & 80’s. I’ve been seeing videos on Instagram of how life was for us then. The memories are overwhelming at times.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Sean

Is he? Or is he speaking with conviction? I'll opt for the conviction aspect.

Oh Sean, I needed this so much today! Life is far too complicated and all the fun stuff is gone! So glad to have someone who understands me ❣️
