Everyone is Florida has a Jimmy Buffett story. Many of them are true.

My older daughter lived in Key Largo and was working as a bartender at a resort in Islamorada.

She became acquainted with a playwright living at the resort. He was working on what would become a Broadway musical -- Meet Me in Margaritaville.

One day, a seaplane landed just offshore. It was piloted by one Jimmy Buffett.

My daughter greeted him, and he posed for a few selfies with her. He went to the bar to meet up with the playwright, and no one recognized him.

Just another beach bum, a little weathered, in a ball cap, T-shirt, shorts and flip flops.

He really did live his life as a song.

Sail on, Jimmy. It’s been a lovely cruise.

A friend had just graduated back in 1975. She went sailing on her birthday with some guys who had a boat down in Florida. They asked if she minded if they stopped to pick up a friend. She was fine with that. They got going again and decided they’d sing to her for her 19th birthday. The guy they picked up was named Jimmy, and he brought along a guitar. They all sang happy birthday to her. I’m not sure I would’ve believed her if she didn’t have a picture of that curly blond haired guy. Thanks, Jimmy.

What a wonderful memory. Jimmy Buffett's music was iconic. As someone said below, the sounds we lived by -- when music was mellow and described different times. We lost a favored son.

Almost yearly, in the winter, we travel down to Key West for some RV time with a bunch of Naval Academy friends. I’ve been to Mallory Square and watched a lot of sunsets. They are always breathtaking but will be a little faded for a while with Jimmy gone.

Thanks Sean for the memories of those sandy bar floors out on Stock Island and a super fine tunesmith story teller. You’re another one.

Such a huge loss to all of us who loved his music so much! Thank you for sharing this great story!

I have never met anyone that couldn’t sing along with Jimmy’s songs & knew every word of every one of those songs.

My family was just singing some of Jimmy’s songs while experiencing Hurricane Idalia’s howling winds and rain. His songs put smiles on all our faces & helped calmed our nerves here in north Florida.

Re: Jimmy Buffett....

I enjoyed a lot of his music for many years. Back in the day, "Margaritaville" could have been my anthem. I've read several articles today about his passing and comments regarding his career, including his appearances in a few movies and TV shows. One I have not seen credited is his appearance in the movie "Cobb" starring Tommy Lee Jones as Ty Cobb. My son and I were extras in that movie and were there (at Rickwood Field) during the filming of a scene where Jones (as Cobb) loses it and charges off the field and into the stands behind third base where he appears to beat the crap out of an armless fan who had been heckling him constantly. The unnamed (and armless) "fan" was Jimmy Buffet. Ol' Jimmy seemed to enjoy the experience tremendously and was friendly and gracious with the time he spent with everyone present.

Good morning Sean and happy Sonday to all yall. Jimmy Buffett will be missed, by everyone but especially those of us from the south who when we were teenagers drove from middle Alabama to Panama City Beach listening to a brand new Jimmy Buffett 8 track and singing at the top of our lungs. Not too many years latter we drove our families to the beach and listened to Jimmy Buffett on a cassett player. Wow those were great times ! Now there is an all Jimmy Buffett channel on the radio via Sirius. Some time today ill listen to Jimmy sing again. That,s the good stuff. The coffee is done. Peace

What's with the double commas? I didn't do that.

I'm just glad the double commas isn't just a special treat for me :) I get it a lot. Jimmy Buffet was someone everybody could relate to, I think. He's going to be missed. He used to show up every once in a while at his sister, Lulu's joint at Gulf Shores. I never got to see him, but know some who did, and they were treated to his genuinely charming smile and welcoming personality. RIP Jimmy Buffett.

I was in the bar of Malaga Inn, a hotel in Mobile in 1974. I was surprised to see a HUGE crowd bunching up in an adjacent room. A pleasant young man was performing delightful songs and the locals were going nuts! I listened from the bar, never knowing I was hearing the up and coming Jimmy.
