Mr. Strawn, Please know that you are not faceless. Your service is greatly appreciated by millions of us. Even though we attend programs like the one Sean wrote about to honor our veterans, our attendance does not touch the veterans who are not a part of that ceremony. It breaks my heart that all veterans are not able to be honored in this way personally. Even though we have a national holiday, I think many of you feel overlooked. I wish I knew of way to make this better. Again, your service is truly appreciated.

So here I am, bawling at 5:30 in the morning, over a performance in a tiny forgotten place no one ever heard of. Only this is the backbone and grit and strength to be a part of the wonderful and complex experiment called The United States of America. Every American feels it, and right now, we need that. I bet there wasn't a dry eye in the place, just as you have reached out and touched our hearts with that essential, unremitting, life-long love of country. God bless everyone who ran into sure death, and thank God they survived. Anyone who has visited The Wall or seen the video of the "angel flights" has mourned the losses even if you didn't suffer one yourself.

I say it often, especially these last few years: we are bred to the bone with love of our nation, and woe beside the fool who challenges her -- or us. The people of all the Boaz towns will always rise to defend our freedom, and thank God for that. Thank you for your service.

Te Burt - I - a 95% retired Crazy DOG Lady - HAVE heard of that Tiny Place. And this coming Saturday, will be attending a ceremony in tiny Seale, Alabama, to dedicate the RUSSELL COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL, recently constructed. On its walk way are bricks engraved with names of nearly two dozen members of my immediate family. This number increases to the high double digits when expanded to include neighbors, friends, other community members. (...and if I had the income of a still practicing plastic surgeon, performing Brazilian Butt Lifts and various mammary procedures, I would place ever so many bricks there, to memorialize many, many more for their service. As it is, I adopted another rescue dog just yesterday...)

Fay, how many rescue dogs do you have now?

Expand full comment

The new girl makes five. Have had up to over 1.5 dozen at times in the past. Mine live into their 90s in "people" years due to good care, but I've lost several over the last year. Have vowed to take in no more- freedom for travel; outdoor fun...but I am a MAGNET...the last one is a sweet little Rottie young lady in need. Well...can accompany me on hikes and camping.

That is wonderful, Fay. How fortunate they are to have you...... and you to have them, of course. Ours were some of the sweetest beings we've ever known and loved.

I never served in the military. I have two sons that served in Afghanistan and in Iraq. They are home now, married with children with the conflicts they were in behind them. Sometimes their service gets in front of them, but they use tools that were given them to put the war behind them. I will listen but not serving means all I can do is listen because I don't know what they went thru. I know what I went thru. Listening to the tv and radio for news, waiting for the phone to ring at all hours of the day and night for just a few minutes to tell me they are ok.

That is the price we pay for living a life of freedom. I have friends and family, past and present, that have fought in wars and conflicts from Japan to Iraq, from the Philippines to Vietnam, from Germany to Iraq. If you ask them if it was worth it, they will tell you yes and that is why they should be honored.

Yes, days and nights on TV to follow the development of war events with our kids in the middle of it. It was horrible. Thank God my son came home alive. So many of his buddies died.

Our daughter is an elementary music teacher, and she has her 4th and 5th graders do a Veterans' Day concert every year. My husband, dad, and dad-in-law are Vets, and they are pictured on the screen along with the photos of many others...family members of students and staff who have served. The kids sing proudly as the pictures are shown. I always cry.

The whole program is amazing and heartwarming. Praise the Lord we can still celebrate those who have served our country...who have served each of us!

Thanks for this essay, Sean. I am eager for tomorrow's program...and will not be wearing eye makeup!

The schools in my small home town still have these celebrations and performances. How well I recall the first one my oldest daughter was in and how she and her classmates sang Anchors Aweigh and performed a few dance numbers. There is nothing quite so adorable as kindergarteners doing the Jitterbug. Yes, we do it for our children, like the little girl with the voice of a cherub. For all who have served, your sacrifices are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
